Männertrauer – von wegen kalter Klumpen

By Thomas Achenbach

Thomas Achenbach examines male grief through reports from widowers and reflections from grief practitioners. Men grieve, the article argues, but often in ways that are less visible and less recognized by hospice and bereavement culture.

The article notes that grief, death and dying are often treated as “female” fields. Hospice training courses and grief-companion networks are heavily dominated by women. This lack of male voices can affect care, because too little is known about the wishes and thoughts of dying and grieving men.

Achenbach discusses observations that men often process grief differently: more inwardly, more alone and more through thinking or action than through conversation. This can lead partners or relatives to misunderstand men as emotionally cold, even though their grief may be intense.

The article cites pastoral and bereavement specialists who emphasize that men often need other men, movement, nature, activity and settings where they do not have to face someone directly while speaking about feelings. Retaining a sense of control can be important even when powerlessness is overwhelming.

The examples show how deep male grief can be, including men who continue to speak internally with their dead wives or feel their presence everywhere. Achenbach closes with the idea that unshared male grief can intensify a life crisis rather than halve it.
